Providing Excellent Customer Service-How to Keep Clients

December 6, 2011

One things I’ve learned throughout my years as a personal trainer is that it is always easier to keep a client than find a new client. Finding a new client can be hard work. With so much competition, the vast array of gyms out there, and a sea of trainers to choose from, how do you set yourself apart from the rest?

The answer is simple: excellent customer service.

If you’ve done the hard work of getting clients, believe me, it takes a lot less energy and effort to keep them! Great customer service is a surefire way of keeping your clients for months and months, if not years. If your service is a need of the client, and the client loves your service and what you have to offer, no economy will keep them from working with you. I’ve experienced this firsthand myself. They may leave for a short while…but trust me, they will find a way to work with you and they will come back.

You need to have a remarkable set of skills, so make sure you’re always studying and aware of what the client needs and wants are and do everything you can to make sure they are receiving a very individual workout. Do the extra things that will make a client feel special-look for an article or a book that may be of interest and share it with your client, email your client to assess how he or she is feeling about their current program, provide them with new challenges to show that you are keeping abreast on what may be new in the fitness industry, send them a card on their birthday, never show up late, never talk or text while working with your client, dress and look the part of a fitness trainer (no sloppy clothing!), and keep it professional! These are just a few things that you can do to keep your client coming back again and again. Realize that you are a professional and you should be acting and treated as one. If you do not follow these guidelines and think that it’s okay to bend the rules every now and then, clients will catch on, and they will quickly replace you with someone else.

There are so many more things that you can do to retain clients, so keep learning and growing daily! Great customer service is key to retaining clients, so practice it daily and watch your business grow!
