Plateaus

September 8, 2007

We’ve all experienced the inevitable plateau. All of us experience it differently, however. For some, the weight doesn’t budge. For others, our body isn’t changing the way we’d like. Maybe you want more “toned” or “ripped” muscles, flatter abs, and your body isn’t responding to what you are currently doing. Or maybe you are just burned out and aren’t feeling energetic or as motivated as you once did. These are all common signs of a plateau, and a definite indicator that something needs to change.

I get the complaint all too often. It’s common and you are not alone. The plateau. For years, I’ve dreamed about having arms that look like Madonna’s, but in reality, I probably won’t get them anytime soon because I don’t want to spend 2 hours working out every day. I have better things to do (like blog!).

I’ve heard a saying about Madonna that is probably very true “not a grape passes that woman’s lips without it being planned”. I believe it. To achieve a certain level of fitness, one must be extremely diligent and careful. When a client tells me they have a certain goal, I ask them how far they are willing to go and what they will sacrifice to get there. Is it worth it?

For me, balance is more satisfying than spending all my free time at the gym. Been there, done that. Balance is crucial in maintaining my sanity and health.

Propylene Glycol in food?

September 5, 2007

The other day, I was snooping through a friend’s grocery bag, which was filled with various processed foods items. I found an item in the bag called “Devil Dogs”-chocolate snack cakes filled with a gooey, creamy substance.

Interesting! I looked at the ingredient list, excited to tell my friend all the horrors of this snack food he was about to eat. Most of the ingredients I expected. Sugar, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oil, and…propylene glycol.

What?! Wait, I had to take a second look. Nope, I wasn’t hallucinating. This ingredient, which is found in anti-perspirants, face cream, hand cream, hand sanitizers, is found in this snack food that children (and even adults) are eating. It is most likely used to give the food it’s chocolate color and flavor (forget about real chocolate/cocoa). I looked it up on an online dictionary, and this is what I got:

Fad Diets

September 4, 2007

Atkins, South Beach, low glycemic, idiot-proof, macrobiotic, cabbage soup…sound familiar? These are the names of just a few diets that gained attention in our media to date. In our quick fix society, a diet that promotes weight loss quickly is much more appealing to a lifestyle change.

Who wants to actually lose weight slowly, in a more effective manner that will keep it off the longest? That is unheard of! Instead, we look to diets that will strip the weight off in the fastest way possible, thus promoting weight gain as soon as the diet is discontinued.

I am not a nutritionist or a dietitian. However, I am passionate about what I put into my body and I love the share the information that I’ve learned over the years with others (sometimes I am extreme, I know…but for good reason!). I have done some pretty silly things in the past, I admit it.

Being a collegiate athlete, I went to the extreme in trying to keep my body weight at a set point. As a teenager, I ate a very low fat/semi-vegetarian diet, then in college I flirted with a vegan diet for a few years, and then tried the Macrobiotic diet for some time. The worse mistake of my life. Don’t get me wrong-I feel that one has every right to choose the lifestyle and diet that suits him or her best; however, these diets did not promote good health for me, and it took my hitting rock bottom to finally wake up and see the light.
