Fast food lies & marketing tools

November 5, 2007

Hello everyone-I hope you are having a blessed day! 🙂

Continuing on with my fast food rant. I think a large part of why 2/3 of Americans are overweight is simply because we are not informed or we are simply being lied to by numerous food companies.

For example, I took it upon myself to take a peek at the Wendy’s menu online-I wanted to check out the nutritional information of their “healthy” salads. Well, one salad had close to 600 calories, 40 grams of fat, 17 of those being saturated fat (the BAD fat), and 1,500 mg of sodium. I was shocked. I don’t know how these companies can market their food as being “healthy” when clearly, they are not.

A lot of people choose these salads over other choices, thinking they are getting a good lunch/dinner, when in fact, they are probably better off getting a hamburger or a grilled chicken sandwich.

Poor marketing can be found everywhere. Food companies tell us to “indulge”, “treat yourself”, or that the product is “fat-free!” (found on licorice labels-since when has licorice ever had fat anyway?). These are all ploys to get us to buy the product, to eat more of the product, and in turn, our health declines while these companies grow richer. More interesting marketing tools I’ve seen recently (and you may disagree with me, which is okay!):

Laziness & Fast Food

October 23, 2007

Hello everyone, I hope you are having a wonderful day!

This weekend, I had a friend in town who requested that I stop by a fast food joint to pick him up some food so that he could happily watch football games without having to leave my apartment. I gladly accepted, and I stopped by a nearby Taco Bell.

I drove into the lot and was shocked at the amount of people lined up on cars to get food (I haven’t been to a Taco Bell in a long, long time). I quickly drove out of the lot and parked in a nearby parking lot to avoid the chaos of the cluster of cars at Taco Bell. I parked, got out of my car and WALKED to the store, and ordered the food inside. Not too many people inside. But outside, the line of cars wrapped around the building and started to spill into the street.

So, conclusion (and reality) is-not only are mass amounts of people still eating poor quality fast food, but many are even too lazy to park their cars and WALK to the building. It was truly a sad, sad sight to behold.

Discipline

October 15, 2007

Hello! Good day to you all.

Last week, I was talking to a client of mine about the show The Biggest Loser. I am a fan of Jillian Michaels. She has an extremely disciplined program and is a “tough love” type of trainer. Because I was an athlete in high school and college, I still maintain much of the disciplined lifestyle I used to adhere to during season.

It isn’t even a question to me anymore–I just made the choice that living a healthful lifestyle was at the top of my list and I’ve never looked back. Jillian is huge on discipline, and so am I. If your body and your health are at the top of your “important” list, then listen up. I am going to tell you what it takes to REALLY get the body that you want.

When you think of the person/celeb/athlete’s body you admire, how far are you willing to go to achieve it? How important is it to you? If looking great is high priority, then you MUST MAKE IT HIGH PRIORITY. Let me get this straight–you absolutely cannot eat what you want and look like Gisele or Madonna, unless you were born with amazing genetics.

Personal Trainers–how to find a good one

September 24, 2007

With so many personal trainers out there, how do you know you are choosing the right person for your needs? Well, first off, you must decide what your needs are, what your goals are, and then proceed from there. You may just want to lose weight and tone up, you may need rehab for a certain injury, or you may be looking for someone who is skilled at working with trained athletes.

Whatever your needs may be, there is certainly a trainer who will fulfill them. You should definitely ask questions and probe–you will be spending a good amount of time and money with this person, so don’t be shy!

Some questions I would ask:

BMR and Calorie needs

September 16, 2007

I recently read an interview that involved a celebrity trainer and her views on losing weight and the best means to go about it. The trainer is a big believer in counting calories for weight loss. Scientifically, counting calories is a very effective means to lose extra pounds. Calories in versus calories out. Consume more calories than you expend, and you will gain weight. Burn more calories than you consume, and you will lose weight.

Sound simple, right? Not really. I believe that for initial weight loss, counting the approximate number of calories you are eating is a highly effective way to lose pounds, but in the long run, it can become tedious.

Also, it has been shown that most people usually UNDERESTIMATE their caloric consumption. I find other methods to be more suitable for the long haul (which I will discuss). Because a healthy body is about a long-term lifestyle change, not about writing down what you eat every single day and then doing that math. Who has time for that?
